Buckwheat is one of our very favorite crops. It's earthy, toasty, nutty flavor adds zing to anything its used for.  Whether it is as a stand alone cereal, cooked for a grain salad or sprinkled on top of your favorite dish, Buckwheat is incredibly versatile. An interesting point of fact...Buckwheat is NOT a grain, but instead is a "pseudo-grain" that has more in common genetically with Rhubarb than Wheat! It also is high in protein and has no gluten whatsoever!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Regenerative farming goes beyond organic. It focuses on practices that actively rebuild soil health, increase biodiversity, and sequester carbon, rather than just avoiding synthetic inputs. At Cold Brook Farm, this means our grain fields are managed to improve the land over time, not just sustain it.

  • Yes. Our grains are available as whole grain berries, coarsely milled porridge, or finely milled flour, so you can choose the format that best fits your recipe from cracked grain porridge to fine sourdough flour.

  • We mill to order whenever possible, so your grain is as fresh as possible when it reaches you.

  • Whole grain berries stay fresh the longest, since the bran and germ are intact and protected.

Once milled into flour or porridge, the exposed bran and germ oils make it more perishable, so we recommend using it within a few weeks to a couple months, or storing it in the fridge or freezer to extend freshness.
